Oral herpes is primarily caused by HSV-1 (Herpes Simplex Virus). It is transmitted when you come in contact with an infected saliva from kissing, sharing utensils or oral intercourse.
The virus causes the characteristic painful sores or blisters on the lips, mouth, gum and other parts of the mouth. Symptoms show up after 2-12 days of exposure.
To reduce the frequency, severity and duration of outbreaks, we prescribe antivirals such as Acyclovir and Valacyclovir (Pill and Ointment available)
