Anxiety

Approximately 3% of the population is impacted by Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), and around 6% of individuals will experience GAD at some point in their lives. While normal stress can be beneficial, keeping us attentive and cautious of potential hazards, individuals with GAD experience excessive, persistent, and unreasonable stress. This leads to anxiety concerning regular situations like their occupation, health, finances, family, and responsibilities.

Common symptoms include:

  • Fatigue
  • Muscle tension or tightness
  • Insomnia
  • Problems with focus and attention
  • Irritability
  • Trouble relaxing
  • Edginess or restlessness
  • Unmanageable anxiety
  • Nightmares
  • Chest pain
  • Generalized body aches, headaches, stomach aches
  • Anxiety related to ordinary matters like work, education or going outside.
  • The exact cause of GAD is not fully understood. There is evidence that it has a genetic component as it tends to run in families and occurs at a higher rate in women. Trauma is also a known contributing factor in the development of GAD.

Your healthcare provider will first rule out other causes such as medications, drug abuse, other mental health disorder, or underlying medical conditions such as thyroid disease. To meet the diagnostic criteria, symptoms must persist for at least 6 months and present on most days. Your healthcare provider may ask you to fill out a GAD-7  questionnaire which involves rating your symptoms on a scale.
