As we gear up for the summer heat it’s not only important to stay on top of your water intake to stay hydrated, but you should also be taking precautions to hydrate your skin. The higher temperatures and sun can cause havoc on your skin and knowing the right steps to take to keep your skin supple and moisturized is important for damage prevention and anti-aging.

How Can You Tell If Your Skin is Dehydrated?

You can tell if your skin is already dehydrated if your skin feels less plump than normal, is red with itchy or irritated patches, or if you’re starting to see flakiness on the skin. Note that dry skin does not necessarily mean you are physically dehydrated, however making sure you drink enough water is helpful to keeping your skin healthy.

What Should You Do if Your Skin is Dehydrated?

There are many ways to hydrate your skin, however if you notice your skin is already dehydrated a few pointers from our dermatologists to get you back on track are:

  • Use gentle products
  • Use a cleanser that does not contain soap
  • Moisturize immediately after you wash to lock in moisture

What are Some Ways to Hydrate Your Skin?

It’s important to moisturize often and understand that moisturizer only holds in the water that is already on your skin, this is one reason that applying lotion and a moisturizer right after a shower or washing your face can help to keep your skin hydrated.

Depending on your climate, hydrating during the different seasons requires different skincare routines. If it’s warm and humid out, skin needs less moisturizer as it will not lose it that easily in that environment. During the summer you will also use lighter, more lotion products versus heavier creams and ointments that are better for colder, winter months.

Some other tips are to use products that are fragrance free, as they can irritate dry skin or use natural products made with shea butter or coconut oil. If you have acne prone skin try using an oil free moisturizer.
