Your resting heart rate is more than just the number displayed on your smartwatch.
It tells you how many times your heart beats each minute when your body is calm and at rest. For most adults, a resting heart rate between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm) is considered typical, although physically fit people often have lower rates.
But here's the part that's easy to miss:
Your usual resting heart rate may be more useful than comparing your number with someone else's.
A change from your normal pattern can sometimes reflect changes in fitness, sleep, stress, hydration, illness, medications or your overall health.
Cardiovascular fitness
Sleep
Stress and anxiety
Illness or fever
Dehydration
Caffeine and nicotine
Certain medications
Thyroid function
Hormonal changes
Heart rhythm problems
Think of resting heart rate as one of your body's baseline vital signs.
When you're resting, your heart only needs to pump enough blood to meet your body's basic needs. A heart that has become more efficient through regular cardiovascular exercise may pump more blood with each beat, allowing it to beat fewer times per minute while you're resting. That's one reason well-trained athletes may have resting heart rates around 40 bpm without anything being wrong.
But lower isn't automatically better, and higher isn't automatically dangerous.
Context matters.
A resting heart rate of 58 might be completely normal for someone who exercises regularly. The same number accompanied by dizziness, fainting or unusual fatigue deserves more attention.
Similarly, a resting heart rate of 85 can fall within the typical adult range. But if your usual rate is 62 and you've suddenly been running around 85 for several days, it's worth asking what changed?
One of the most useful ways to think about resting heart rate is as a trend rather than a single number.
Maybe your smartwatch normally shows a resting heart rate around 65 bpm. Then you notice it has been closer to 78 for several days.
That doesn't automatically mean you have a heart problem.
Your body may simply be working harder than usual.
Poor sleep, emotional stress, hot weather, illness, fever and certain medications can raise your heart rate. Caffeine, nicotine and some cold medications can also cause an increase. Thyroid hormone levels can influence heart rate as well.
Fitness can move the number in the opposite direction. As cardiovascular conditioning improves, the heart often becomes more efficient, and resting heart rate may gradually decrease.
This is also why one strange smartwatch reading shouldn't send you into a panic. Wearables can be useful for spotting trends, but they aren't always perfectly accurate.
What deserves more attention is a persistent change from your normal baseline, particularly when it comes with symptoms.
Long-term research has also suggested that resting heart-rate patterns may provide information about cardiovascular health over time. However, resting heart rate is one piece of the picture—not a diagnosis by itself.
For a useful baseline, check your pulse when you're truly resting.
Morning can be a good time—after a good night's sleep and before coffee or much activity.
You can use a smartwatch or fitness tracker, or check your pulse manually at your wrist. If you're checking manually, count the beats for a full 60 seconds.
Then watch the pattern over time.
Instead of worrying because today's number is five beats higher than yesterday's, ask whether your resting heart rate has changed consistently over several days or weeks.
That trend is usually much more informative.
A consistently elevated resting heart rate can sometimes occur with stress, illness, poor sleep or stimulants, but it can also be associated with medical conditions.
A resting heart rate consistently above 100 bpm is considered tachycardia and should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
A resting heart rate below 60 bpm isn't automatically abnormal, particularly in physically fit people or those taking certain medications. But if you're not highly conditioned and your heart rate is repeatedly low—especially with dizziness, fainting, unusual fatigue or shortness of breath—it deserves evaluation.
You should also contact a provider if your heartbeat frequently feels irregular, fluttering, pounding or unusually fast.
Seek urgent or emergency medical attention when a significant heart-rate change or palpitations occur with symptoms such as chest pain, fainting, severe dizziness or shortness of breath.

A temporary increase may simply reflect a stressful week, poor sleep or an illness. A gradual decrease may accompany improved cardiovascular fitness.
But when your resting heart rate changes significantly and stays there—especially if you're experiencing symptoms—it's worth paying attention.
Sometimes your pulse is simply a number.
Other times, it's one of the first clues your body gives you that something has changed.
